Brief History

2020

In 2020, President Xi Jinping visited Tsinghua University and inspected its  COVID-19 prevention and control related scientific research work. The University founded the Vanke School of Public Health, where all the teachers and students, unswervingly assuming the duty of education while fighting against the epidemic, made a number of achievements in scientific research, which effectively facilitated epidemic prevention and control.

In 2020, the University held the 18th seminar on scientific research work, at which measures were explored to integrate the significance of steering and Tsinghua characteristics into the innovative system serving the construction of a world-class university. At the end of the seminar,, Several Opinions on Perfecting and Developing Universities' Innovative System  was issued. Before that, Tsinghua University founded a number of institutes, including the Institute for Aero Engine, the Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the Research Center for Big Data and the major national science, and set up technology infrastructure "cutting-edge physical experiment facilities with extremely low radiation background placed extremely deep underground.", These moves were a significant measure taken by Tsinghua University to serve China’s strategy of prioritizing innovation-led development. By the year 2019, Tsinghua University had received a total of 591 national awards for its achievements in science and technology.

By 2020, Tsinghua University’s comprehensive reforms had achieved impressive successes. It had made significant achievements in  "double first-class" construction strategy, and started preparing its "14th Five-Year" plan in all aspects. The University set up Zhili, Weiyang, Tanwei, Xingjian and Rixin academies of classical learning to advance the overall talent cultivation under the pilot reform program of Enrollment for Basic Subjects.

In 2019, Tsinghua University conferred an honorary doctorate on His Excellency, Mr Putin, President of Russia, in the presence of President Xi Jinping.

In 2018, Tsinghua University convened the 25th seminar on education work, where consensus on the "three-in-one" education concept was reached. Prior to this, the university had adopted the policy of recruiting students based on general discipline orientation and reform in the aspects of cultivation and management in an all-round way. The University introduced the "application - review" system for choosing doctoral candidates also in an all-round way. To fulfill the fundamental task of fostering virtue and cultivating talents, and to consistently improve the quality of cultivated talents, Tsinghua University set the year 2019 as the "Year for Study Style Construction" and published Several Opinions on Perfecting the System for Academic Evaluation.

In 2018, Tsinghua was chosen as one of the first batch of demonstration universities in national Party construction, a pilot university for "three-all education" comprehensive reform and an innovative development center for conducting ideological and political work in colleges and universities.

In 2017, the 14th Tsinghua University CPC Congress was held, at which the strategy of a "new three-step development" was proposed which set targets that Tsinghua University would reach the world-class level by 2020, fight its way into the front rank of world-class universities by 2030 and rank among the top ones by around 2050.

In 2017, Tsinghua University's Plan for Constructing a First-Class University , based on the Overall Plan for Advancing the Construction of World-Class Universities and Disciplines as a Whole by the State Council was officially issued.

In 2016, President Xi Jinping pointed out "Tsinghua University is a flag of our country's higher education" in his congratulatory letter to Tsinghua University on its 105th anniversary. In the same year, a ceremony was held to signal the start of Schwarzman Scholars - a groundbreaking cross-culture global leadership program, addressed by Vice Premier of the State Council Liu Yandong, for which Chinese President Xi Jinping and American President Obama respectively sent a letter of congratulation.

In 2016, the university formulated and launched the "Global Strategy". Since then, the Asian Universities Alliance, the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate and the Global MOOC Alliance have been set up one after another at Tsinghua University's initiation; Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, China-Italy Design Innovation Hub, Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center, Tsinghua Latin America Center, China-Africa Leadership Development Center have been established successively.

In 2015, Tsinghua University collaborated with the University of Washington and Microsoft to establish the Global Innovation Exchange (GIX) Institute in Seattle, Washington, U.S. During his U.S. visit, President Xi Jinping paid a special visit to GIX and presented GIX a metasequoia.

In 2014, Tsinghua University Constitution  was issued after the approval of the Ministry of Education. At the same time, Tsinghua University's Scheme of Comprehensive Reform was officially approved and fully implemented. The same year, the proposal of building a three-in-one talent cultivation model by integrating the shaping of the view of value, the cultivation of ability and the imparting of knowledge was brought up at Tsinghua University's 24th seminar on education.

In 2013, a joint team composed of researchers from Tsinghua University, the Institute of Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Stanford University under the leadership of Academician Xue Qikun from Tsinghua University observed the Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect experimentally for the first time. In the same year, Tsinghua launched the "Xuetang Online" MOOC platform to provide online courses for learners across the globe.

In 2012, the 13th Tsinghua University CPC Congress was held, at which a proposal was put forward that Tsinghua should unite world-class criteria, Chinese characteristics and its style as its standard  for the university operation, speed up the construction of a world-class university and create a new situation for its scientific development in the new century.

In 2011, the meeting to mark Tsinghua University's 100th anniversary was held in the Great Hall of the People, addressed by Hu Jintao on behalf of the Party Central Committee and the State Council.

In 2009, the Tsinghua Xuetang Talent Cultivation Program was introduced to push forward the reform of different disciplines, departments and colleges, improve talent cultivation models, and enhance the overall quality of talents trained in the university.

In 2008, nearly 2,500 precious bamboo slips dating back to the period of Warring States donated by alumni entered Tsing Hua Yuan, which are also known as "Tsinghua bamboo slips". Researchers took necessary measures to protect it and studied it only to discover that the earliest decimal calculator in human history Computing Table was recorded on it.   It was awarded the Guinness World Record for “the oldest decimal multiplication table” in the world in 2017.

In 2001, Tsinghua University held a meeting to mark its 90th anniversary in the presence of Jiang Zemin, Zhu Rongji, Hu Jintao, Li Lanqing and other Party and state leaders.

Tsinghua University was now a comprehensive university offering a wide range of courses across  all the comprehensive disciplines including sciences, engineering, liberal arts, law, economy, management and art , thanks to its approximately 20 years of discipline adjustment and construction.

Since 2001, Tsinghua University, has been assisting Qinghai University and Xinjiang University to run poverty alleviation projects. In 2003, a poverty alleviation through education program was initiated, and the network platforms were successively built in state-level poor counties, old revolutionary base areas and minorities inhabited areas nearby borderlands for poverty alleviation through education.

In 1999, the Central Academy of Arts & Design was merged into Tsinghua University and renamed the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University.

In 1998, Tsinghua University was the first among colleges and universities across China to open a "green channel" for freshmen, offering financial assistance to the students who came from financially-weak families. In the same year, Tsinghua University began to implement the program of building a "green university" with the aim to carry out green education, give impetus to green scientific research and build a green campus.

In 1998, in response to the central government's decision to carry out the "985 Project", Tsinghua University formulated a framework plan for building a first-class university, which was officially approved and put into practice in 1999.

In 1985, at the 7th Tsinghua University CPC Congress, a proposal was brought forward that Tsinghua University should be developed into a world-class socialist university with Chinese characteristics step by step. Afterwards, Tsinghua University defined the general strategy of "three-step development in three nine years" and pushed forward the implementation of the strategy.

The three-semester system has been implemented since 1985 by adding a practical teaching-oriented summer semester to the original two. The same year, Tsinghua University also became one of the first batch of universities to start postdoctoral studies.

In 1984, the Graduate School was founded at Tsinghua University as one of the first group of pilot graduate schools approved by the State Council. The School’s aim was the cultivation of high-level talents.

Since 1984, ever year, the University convenes a seminar on teaching to discuss teaching methods in an extensive and in-depth way.

In 1978, China sent 50 students including nine teachers from Tsing Hua to the U.S. for further study, which served as a curtain-raiser to the international cooperation and exchange Tsing Hua University carried out after the reform and opening up.

In 1977, the National College Entrance Examination, widely known as the Gaokao,  was resumed. The 1977 and 1978 freshmen of Tsing Hua University were enrolled in February and October of 1978 respectively. Tsing Hua University successively resumed the work of the teaching and research groups of different departments, established a faculty and a committee to strengthen the foundational courses. It also gradually  launched more courses for undergraduates of  Sciences, Arts and Management faculties. Its scientific research also quickly returned to normal and the university was once again full of vitality.

In 1960, the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology (No. 200) was established and the average age of the team members was only 23.5 years old. In 1964, the Institute successfully developed the first self-designed nuclear reactor in China, which was followed by the development a low-temperature nuclear heating reactor, a high-temperature gas cooled reactor and so forth in the years to come. Since 2006, the Institute has been responsible for the high-temperature gas cooled reactor-powered nuclear power plant demonstration project - a major specialized national science and technology project.

In 1958, Tsing Hua University proposed and applied an integrative approach to teaching, research and production, promoting the overall development of the university. Under the supervision of teachers, graduating students completed practice-oriented graduation projects that were part of key national construction projects and accomplished real-life production tasks, while developing a working style of combining theory with practice.

Since 1955, Tsing Hua University successively established new majors including atomic energy, semiconductor, automatic remote control, gas turbine, and electronic computer.  New departments were accordingly founded such as engineering physics, engineering chemistry, engineering mechanics and mathematics, and automatic control.

In 1955, Professor Liu Xianzhou joined the Communist Party of China, which caused widespread excitement and interest. President Jiang Nanxiang gave a speech titled "The Communist Party is the glorious home of advanced scientists" at the Party branch meeting, which was later published by "Beijing Daily". After that, more than 30 professors and associate professors from Tsing Hua University like Zhang Zigao, Liang Sicheng, Zhang Wei and Zhang Guangdou joined the Party one after another.

In 1954, the title of “Excellent Class” was awarded to Class 42 of the Department of Civil Engineering, and other classes on campus soon followed suits by joining the wave of becoming excellent classes.

In 1953, Tsing Hua University initiated a ”double-shoulder” system of political tutors for those who work and study at the same time. It was a working system that was worked out to be unique and effective in ensuring the cultivation of politically sound and professionally competent talents. In 1978, hearing the report on Tsing Hua University's situation, Deng Xiaoping pointed out: "In the past, Tsing Hua's political tutors were chosen from its senior students and young teachers. Years have passed and now Tsing Hua has cultivated and formed a professional team made up of politically sound and professionally competent political tutors. This is good experience."

The year 1953 saw the holding of its first Student Track and Field Games. Every afternoon at 4:30, the broadcast would always ring out: "Dear students, it's time for extracurricular exercise. Go out of the classroom, out of the dormitory; go take part in physical exercises, maintain a strong physique, and strive to serve our motherland in a healthy state for at least 50 years!”

In 1952, colleges and universities across the country underwent a large-scale restructuring process.Tsing Hua University was transformed from a comprehensive university into a multidisciplinary polytechnic university. By 1965, the number of the laboratories in the University increased to 83 from 16 before the restructuring, and there were a total of 12 departments and 40 majors. The number of students enrolled in Tsing Hua University exceeded 10,000, the campus area doubled its initial size in the early years of the PRC, and several new teaching and research buildings were built.

From 1952 to 1966, Jiang Nanxiang served as the President of Tsing Hua University. During his tenure, he creatively implemented necessary policies to make Tsing Hua a university that is suitable for China's national conditions, leading to the significant development of the University.

In June 1950, Chairman Mao inscribed the name of Tsing Hua University for the University badge at the request of Tsing Hua faculty and students. He wrote a total of six drafts and left a personal note that read “the cursive script on the lower right seems better.”

In September 1950, Tsinghua University  launched the Chinese Language Program for Exchange Students from Eastern European countries and admitted 33 international students from five Eastern European countries. These students were the first batch of international students to study in New China.

On October 1, 1949, Tsing Hua faculty members, students and staff attended the founding ceremony of the PRC. The group led by the likes of Liang Sicheng, Lin Huiyin, and Zhang Ding was involved in the design of the National Emblem and the Monument to the People's Heroes.

In June 1949, the Tsing Hua branch of the CPC published a list of Party members at the Old Gate. Under the leadership of the Tsing Hua branch, faculty and students actively participated in the democratic movements, championed progressive ideas, and contributed to the development of the University.

In 1946, the National Southwest Associated University announced its closure. There were about 8,000 students and nearly 4,000 graduates in the National Southwest Associated University; more than 1,100 students from this university joined the army and participated in the Resistance Movements Against Japanese Aggression. 

In October of the same year, the National Tsing Hua University resumed its teaching in Tsing Hua Yuan. It had five colleges and 26 departments which offered courses on including arts, sciences, law, engineering, and agriculture, one preparatory class and 23 research institutes. From 1946 to 1948, a total of 514 baccalaureate students and five graduate students graduated from the University.

In 1938,  the University relocated to Kunming, Yunnan Province, and was renamed the National Southwest Associated University.

After the Marco Polo Bridge Incident on July 7, 1937, the National Tsing Hua University moved to Changsha, Hunan Province and merged with the National University of Peking and Nankai University to become the Associated National Universities.

The Communist Party and the patriotic faculty and students of Tsing Hua University were in the vanguard of the December 9th Movement in 1935.

From 1931 to 1948, Mei Yiqi, who had returned from the U.S. following the completion of his higher education, served as the President of the National Tsing Hua University. He implemented general education, paid attention to basic theoretical teaching and scientific research, and contributed immensly to the overall development of the University. By the year 1937, the National Tsing Hua University had evolved into a comprehensive university with 16 departments and four colleges in Arts, Sciences, Law and Engineering.

The year 1926 witnessed the birth of the branch of the Communist Party of China in Tsing Hua College. Under the leadership of the Party, the patriotic and democratic movement  gained a strong foothold on campus.

In 1925, Tsing Hua College began its transition to a full-fledged university by launching its undergraduate program and the Research Institute of Chinese Literature. In the same year, Tsing Hua College enrolled the first batch of 95 students, including Wang Ganchang, Zhou Tongqing, Shi Shiyuan, Zhang Dayu, Xia Jianbai, Shen Youding and Yuan Hanqing for its undergraduate program.

In 1912, Tsing Hua Imperial College was renamed Tsing Hua College with an eight-year schooling system, including both middle school and high school.

In 1911, the Bureau of Educational Mission to the U.S. in Tsing Hua Yuan founded by the Qing government was renamed Tsing Hua Imperial College. From 1909 to 1911, three batches of selected 180 students, including Mei Yiqi, Hu Shi, Zhao Yuanren, Zhu Kezhen and Hu Gangfu, went to the U.S. for higher studies.
