Jichen Liu: Cutting Food Waste for a Sustainable World

"We hope our efforts can start a new trend among the younger generation, encouraging them to carry out the virtue of cherishing food and developing the habit of thrift," said Jichen Liu, a candidate for China's Forbes 30 Under 30 this year. From the School of Civil Engineering, Liu's entrepreneurship journey started back in 2016 when he was just a sophomore student and was actively trying to address food waste.

Inspired over a dinner meal when he saw restaurants incentivizing customers to finish food, Liu knows that something could be done to enhance the process and scale up this initiative. This burning idea got Liu to work day and night with his teammates while receiving much consultation from Tsinghua X-Lab, the university's very own business incubator. This project soon evolved to become one of China's fastest-growing WeChat applications with a nearly 5 million user base to date.

Owing much to his perseverance and endeavor as a #TsinghuaRen, the United Nations also nominated Liu as China's first Young Leader for the Sustainable Development Goals. He presented his project Clear Plate to the UN Secretary-General recently and got insightful encouragement from him. We can't wait to see more from Liu over the next two years!
