“It is a race against time: we must fight side by side with the medical personnel and use our scientific research results as early as possible to help patients.” Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Shan Sisi and her team have worked in the laboratory day and night for half a year.
Sisi joined Tsinghua School of Medicine in 2015 to study for her doctorate degree. Under the supervision of Professor Zhang Linqi, Sisi’s research team focuses on the study of infectious disease and immune research, including the SARS-CoV-2, HIV-1, and Ebola.
Back in January when restrictions were still high, Tsinghua granted Sisi and her team members permission to come back to campus and offered funds to support their studies and experiments.
Sisi feels a sense of urgency, which motivates her rigorous work routine and commitment. She highlights how important their contribution is: “It is the responsibility of the young community of scientific researchers to tackle the disease with hardcore results and save people’s lives.”
After countless attempts and trials, Sisi’s team hard work has paid off. They developed a vaccine and antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, and clinical tests are currently underway.
